KUCHING: Community leader, Kapitan Datuk Lau Sie Lok, has urged employers to continue offering 24-hour Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) protection for workers despite the Federal Cabinet’s decision to make the scheme voluntary.

He said the government’s decision was likely made after considering various factors, including current economic pressures affecting businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises, while balancing operational flexibility with long term sustainability.

“Although the government has made the 24-hour SOCSO Protection Plan voluntary, companies with the means should continue protecting their employees because workers remain the most valuable asset of any organisation,” Lau said in a press statement today.

He explained that the comprehensive scheme extends protection beyond workplace accidents, helping to ease employees’ financial burdens while enabling employers to fulfil their corporate social responsibility and strengthen their reputation among stakeholders and the wider community.

Lau also said comprehensive protection could enhance employees’ sense of belonging, improve staff retention, and reduce the broader social and family burdens arising from unexpected accidents outside working hours.

He added that employees who enjoy adequate protection would have greater peace of mind, allowing them to focus on their responsibilities and contribute more effectively to productivity and organisational performance.

Lau also urged the government to intensify public awareness campaigns so employers and employees could better understand the scheme’s coverage, practical benefits, and real life success stories before deciding against participation.

He further suggested introducing tax incentives or recognition programmes to encourage more companies to voluntarily maintain the 24-hour SOCSO Protection Plan, creating mutual benefits for employers, workers, and the government.

While respecting the government’s policy of giving businesses greater autonomy to decide whether to participate, Lau expressed hope that supporting measures would continue to be strengthened to safeguard employees’ welfare and fundamental rights.

He stressed that accidents are unpredictable and that additional protection provides greater security for workers and their families. Safeguarding employees, he said, reflects responsible corporate leadership while contributing to a more caring society.
