SEBAUH: Agrofest Sebauh 2026 is set to accelerate agri-food development in Sarawak, with Sebauh poised to emerge as a key nangchem production hub through improved technology, knowledge transfer, and stronger market access.

Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, said Agrofest serves as a strategic platform connecting farmers with the Department of Agriculture and related agencies to obtain technical guidance, advisory services, and the latest technologies to improve productivity and income.

“Agrofest is not just about selling products or promoting them. It is an opportunity for the public to obtain guidance from the Department of Agriculture on what crops to cultivate and how to develop their agricultural land,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the Agrofest Sebauh 2026 in Sebauh town today.

Dr Rundi said the development of the agri-food sector requires continuous collaboration between the government and local communities to ensure agricultural land is utilised more productively, while enhancing the competitiveness of local produce through modern technology and farming practices.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Agriculture Department’s Director, Dominic Chunggat, said the department is conducting a study to develop Sebauh as a nangchem production area following growing demand for the crop, including from the Brunei Darussalam market.

He said the initiative would create opportunities for more farmers to venture into high-value crop cultivation while strengthening the state’s agri-food supply chain.

“We are carrying out a study to develop Sebauh as a nangchem production area. Demand for nangchem from Sebauh has been very encouraging, including from Brunei Darussalam. This is a positive sign and provides an opportunity to involve more farmers in this industry,” he said.

He also encouraged growers to obtain the Malaysian Good Agricultural Practices (MyGAP) certification to ensure their produce meets food safety standards, while boosting consumer confidence and improving the market competitiveness of agricultural products.

At the same time, farmers were urged to focus on crops with strong market demand to generate more sustainable incomes and support Sarawak’s food security agenda.
