MIRI: Police have seized more than 61 tonnes of illegally imported frozen pork products worth RM6.2 million following a raid on an unlicensed cold storage facility here, in one of Sarawak’s largest food enforcement operations this year.

The operations, carried out at about 8 pm on July 9, was led by the Royal Malaysia Police’s (PDRM) Wildlife Crime Bureau and Special Investigation Intelligence (WCB/PSK) under the Internal Security and Public Order Department (JKDNKA), with support from the Miri District Police Headquarters Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) unit and the Sarawak Veterinary Services Department, Miri Division.

A 26-year-old local man was arrested during the operations.

Officers recovered more than 61 tonnes of frozen pork products believed to have been imported without the required permits, with the total seizure estimated at RM6,197,060.

The suspect is being investigated under Sections 9(1) and 9(3) of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999 for allegedly importing animal products without a valid permit. A RM25,000 compound has also been issued under the same legislation.

Director of the Internal Security and Public Order Department, CP Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, said the operations underscored PDRM’s continued commitment to dismantling illegal supply chains involving smuggled food products and protecting public health.

He said the force would continue to intensify intelligence gathering, surveillance and joint enforcement operations to curb organised criminal activities linked to the illegal importation, storage and distribution of prohibited goods.

Yusri said WCB/PSK officers had carried out 201 raids nationwide between Jan 1 and Jul 10, leading to the arrest of 375 individuals.

During the same period, authorities recorded seizures worth RM264.86 million, involving offences related to smuggling, controlled and subsidised goods, frozen food products, wildlife crimes and electronic waste.

He also urged members of the public to continue sharing information with the police to support ongoing efforts to combat organised crime and safeguard public safety.
