SERIAN: Residents of Kampung Riih Daso collected more than 3.6 tonnes of recyclable materials, electronic waste (e-waste) and used cooking oil during the 2026 Dengue Prevention Campaign.
Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus said the campaign, which began on July 4, collected 1,179.05kg of recyclable materials, 2,136.41kg of electrical and e-waste, and 312kg of used cooking oil.
He said the achievement showed that a united community could make a significant impact in promoting cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
“The encouraging response from Kampung Riih Daso residents shows that when the community works together, efforts to maintain a clean environment can produce meaningful results.
“I congratulate the residents for their volunteerism and commitment. I hope their efforts will serve as an example for other communities,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Dengue Prevention Campaign organised by the Serian District Council here today (July 11).
John said dengue remained a major public health concern, with Malaysia recording 38,842 cases as of June 27, representing a 29 per cent increase compared with the corresponding period last year.
He said Sarawak, meanwhile, had recorded 495 cases as of Epidemiological Week 23.
“Although the number of cases in Sarawak is lower than in most other states, we cannot afford to be complacent as the risk of transmission remains, including in this district.
“These statistics serve as a reminder that dengue prevention is a shared responsibility.
“Everyone has a role to play by ensuring their surroundings remain clean and free of Aedes mosquito breeding grounds,” he said.
He also urged the public to continue working with the Serian District Council and the Serian Divisional Health Office to keep their surroundings clean and spend at least 10 minutes each week eliminating Aedes mosquito breeding grounds.
