KUCHING: Malaysian fashion brand Bayu Somerset has opened its first outlet in East Malaysia at Vivacity Megamall here, making it the 18th in the country after five years of operations.
Bayu Somerset head of marketing Diana Kamalul said the decision to establish a physical presence in Sarawak was driven by the strong support the brand has received from customers in the state since it began as an online business.
“Throughout the past five years, we have received an amazing response from our customers in Sarawak.
“It was only logical for us to open an outlet here. This is our first outlet in East Malaysia, and hopefully the first of many,” she said during the store’s grand opening ceremony on Saturday.
Head of commercial and retail Aliesha Nadira said Bayu Somerset aims to establish a presence in every state in Malaysia, with Kuching chosen as its first location in East Malaysia.
“We’re already planning our next expansion, with a Sabah outlet expected to open by the end of the year.
“We are always on the lookout for new locations and conducting site visits. We see a lot of potential here, so stay tuned,” she said.

Known for its vibrant and artistic approach to traditional attire, Diana said Bayu Somerset considers itself an art brand that incorporates creative themes into every collection.
While the brand retains traditional hues such as the baju kurung Kedah, baju kebaya and baju kurung kebarung, it gives them a modern touch through bold colours and contemporary prints.
“We don’t usually go for pastel colours. We prefer colourful, vibrant shades because we want people to feel confident when they wear our baju,” she said.
With its entry into the East Malaysian market, Bayu Somerset is also considering launching an exclusive Sarawak-inspired collection.
“We want to learn more from the people here first. Along the way, we’ll definitely be inspired to incorporate Sarawak’s local elements into our designs,” she added.
The brand also emphasised its commitment to inclusivity by offering sizes ranging from XXS to 5XL, allowing customers of different body types to enjoy its collections.
“We believe in inclusivity and diversity so that everyone, regardless of shape or size, can wear our baju,” she said.
