MIRI: Volunteerism remains one of society’s greatest strengths and must continue to be nurtured, particularly among the younger generation, to build a more compassionate, resilient and united community.

Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin who made the call said humanitarian values had become increasingly important as communities grapple with growing social and humanitarian challenges.

He was speaking at the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Miri Branch’s World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day celebration and Annual Parade on Sunday.

He described the annual celebration as more than a ceremonial event, saying it recognised the dedication of millions of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers worldwide who serve humanity selflessly without regard to race, religion, political beliefs or social background.

“Behind every disaster, accident or emergency, there are always Red Crescent volunteers ready to respond. They may not seek recognition, but their presence brings hope to those facing their darkest moments. That is the true spirit of humanity,” he said.

Lee congratulated the MRCS and its Miri Branch for organising the celebration, praising the organisation’s longstanding contribution to humanitarian assistance, volunteer service, health education and community outreach.

He said this year’s theme, “The Power of Volunteerism”, underscored the vital role volunteers play in strengthening communities.

“Volunteerism is more than contributing time and energy. It reflects responsibility, integrity, empathy and a commitment to serving others. These are values that every society must continue to cultivate,” he said.

Calling on young Red Crescent members to uphold the spirit of volunteerism, Lee urged them to become future leaders distinguished not only by academic excellence but also by compassion, leadership and public service.

He said the first aid, disaster management and community service skills acquired through the organisation would equip young volunteers with lifelong capabilities while preparing them to respond effectively during times of crisis.

Lee reaffirmed the government’s appreciation for volunteer organisations such as the MRCS, describing them as strategic partners in disaster preparedness, public health education, humanitarian assistance and community resilience.

He also paid tribute to teachers, officers, parents and volunteers whose commitment has helped shape generations of socially responsible and compassionate young people.

The celebration culminated in the society’s Annual Parade involving 22 contingents, comprising Red Crescent Cadet Units, Junior Red Crescent members, students from Sunflower Centre, MRCS staff, volunteers and supporting agencies.
