BRUNEI: Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam are making progress on plans to strengthen cross-border electricity connectivity, with ongoing discussions on the proposed power interconnection project advancing positively.
The matter was among the key outcomes of a bilateral meeting between Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Brunei’s Minister of Foreign Affairs II, Datuk Seri Setia Erywan Pehin Datuk Pekerma Jaya Mohd Yusof, today.
Awang Tengah said both sides had reviewed the progress of the electricity interconnection project, describing it as a strategic initiative to strengthen regional energy security and enhance the resilience of electricity supply systems.
He said discussions and engagements between the relevant authorities have been progressing well and expressed hope that the ongoing negotiations would achieve positive outcomes in the near future.
“Closer cooperation in the energy sector would also pave the way for stronger economic ties while supporting the sustainable development agendas of both Sarawak and Brunei,” he said.
He also added that Sarawak also reaffirmed its readiness to share its expertise in renewable energy development, including providing opportunities for Bruneians interested in gaining experience and building careers in the hydropower and green energy sectors through Sarawak Energy.
Beyond energy cooperation, both leaders exchanged views on a range of issues of mutual interest, including border matters, which continue to be addressed through close collaboration and mutual understanding between the relevant agencies on both sides.
Awang Tengah thanked Erywan for hosting the meeting, and reaffirmed that the longstanding relationship between Sarawak and Brunei remains an important foundation for expanding mutually beneficial cooperation.
He also expressed hope that several matters currently under negotiation could be concluded before the next meeting between the leaders of Sarawak and Brunei, allowing agreed initiatives to be implemented more swiftly.
Awang Tengah said Sarawak remains committed to strengthening its friendship and strategic partnership with Brunei across various sectors, including trade, investment, energy and regional development, for the mutual benefit of both sides.
