BAU: REDEEMS has the potential to become a stronger cultural tourism attraction through better infrastructure, year-round programmes and closer collaboration with the tourism industry, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said the annual celebration deserves wider exposure and should be included in Sarawak’s official tourism calendar to attract more visitors while showcasing Bidayuh culture.

“If this programme is not already part of the tourism calendar, then work together with my ministry so we can include it because programmes like this deserve wider promotion,” he said when representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the opening of the 18th Gawai Carnival REDEEMS 2026 and Battle of the Band here last night (July 18).

Abdul Karim said REDEEMS should build on the success of its annual Gawai celebration by organising programmes throughout the year instead of limiting activities to a single annual event.

He suggested initiatives such as youth camps, conferences, cultural workshops and heritage programmes that would keep the centre active while creating more opportunities for community participation and visitor engagement.

He also highlighted the importance of improving infrastructure around the REDEEMS Centre, including better street lighting and road access, saying improved connectivity would support tourism growth and larger cultural events.

He said closer collaboration with tourism stakeholders, including the Sarawak Tourism Federation and organisers of the Rainforest World Music Festival, could further raise REDEEMS’ profile as a cultural destination.

“Rather than organising one event a year, we should explore ways to make this centre active throughout the year with programmes that benefit both the community and the tourism industry,” he added.
