KUCHING: An elderly Sarawakian who was seen in a video living in difficult conditions in Johor can return home if he wishes to do so.
The assurance of help comes from Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri who said checks carried out by the ministry found that the senior citizen is still a registered voter in Saratok.
“If he wants to return to Sarawak, we will help find the best solution, including suitable accommodation.
“Given his age, his health may no longer permit him to continue working,” she said after officiating at the ‘Program Kasih Ibu Tunggal (kasihnITa) 2026 Peringkat Negeri Sarawak’ here today (July 19).
She said the Johor Social Welfare Department (JKM) had responded swiftly after coming to know of the viral video, with officers visiting the residence where the elderly man was staying at about 10pm on Saturday (July 18).
Nancy said the ministry is now gathering more comprehensive information on his condition and his immediate needs to determine the most appropriate form of assistance.
She added that any support would be coordinated with Sarawak House in Johor.
Calling on Sarawakians living outside the state to care for one another, Nancy said community support is especially important for those facing hardship.
“We do not want to see Sarawakians left to wander without support.
“We want to find a lasting solution, whether that means improving his living situation or helping him return to Kuching, to Sarawak, and to his family if that is what he wants,” she said.
She also urged the man’s family members or friends to come forward if they are able to assist, saying their cooperation would make it easier to provide the help he needs.
“The important thing is for family members or friends who are close to him to step forward. We will work together through Sarawak House and the Social Welfare Department,” she said.
The video drew much attention after circulating on social media showing the elderly man living in impoverished conditions in Johor.
According to claims accompanying the video, the man had suffered a stroke and was later assisted by members of the public after being found living in dire straits.
