KUCHING:The Sarawak government hopes the new leadership of the Sarawak Council for Customs and Traditions (MAIS) will strengthen efforts to preserve, develop and promote the state’s native customs as an important cultural heritage.

Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai said this during a courtesy call by newly appointed MAIS chief councillor Datuk Dr Neilson Ilan Mersat at Baitulmakmur I Building here today (July 20).

The meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between the state government leadership and the state’s customary institution in efforts to preserve and further develop Sarawak’s native customs.

Ilan reported for duty on July 13 and will lead the council for a three-year term.

During the meeting, Sikie congratulated him on his appointment and also extended his congratulations to the newly appointed MAIS secretary Elsie William.

The discussion also touched on the upcoming Iban Customary Symposium, scheduled to be held in Sibu in September 2026, which is expected to involve about 300 participants, including community leaders, Iban community chiefs and representatives from state government agencies.

Also present were Deputy Minister in the  Premier’s Department (Law and Native Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat and senior MAIS officials.
