BINTULU: The 19th Borneo International Kite Festival (BIKF) 2026 is expected to generate greater tourism and economic opportunities for Bintulu, attracting 154 international kite flyers from 19 countries alongside participants from 10 Malaysian states.
Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming said the internationally recognised festival has grown beyond a cultural attraction, becoming an important driver of tourism, local businesses and economic opportunities for communities.
“BIKF is more than just a festival. It invigorates the tourism sector, supports local businesses and creates economic opportunities for the community,” he said when officiating the festival from July 22 to 26, at the Old Bintulu Airport site on Thursday.
Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) Corporate Services assistant general manager, Mohd Ansari Mohd Syed Ahmad, said this year’s festival reflects BIKF’s continued international appeal despite challenges such as global economic pressures, rising airfares and changes in travel schedules.
He attributed the festival’s success to the strong commitment of organisers and participants in ensuring BIKF remains a highly anticipated annual event.
“BIKF is not merely a festival but a catalyst for Bintulu’s economic prosperity,” he said.
He added that a host of attractions, including giant kite displays, LED night kite performances, the BIKF Parade and a Trade Expo featuring 160 local entrepreneurs, are expected to further stimulate tourism and business activity throughout the festival.
