MARUDI: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg visited Masjid As-Salam Marudi after officiating the Baram Regatta 2026 here today (Jul 25).
According to UKAS, the visit was to inspect the completed upgrading project at the mosque, which was carried out in three phases at a total cost of RM2.48 million.
During the visit, Abang Johari received a briefing from the Sarawak Islamic Council on the implementation of each project phase, which involved upgrading facilities and improving the mosque’s internal and external spaces.
The first phase, costing RM1.47 million, began on March 8, 2021 and was completed on Aug 24, 2023.
The works included replacing the mosque’s dome with a Nusantara-style roof, constructing reinforced concrete staircases, repainting the interior and exterior sections, installing new carpets at the prayer hall and mihrab, ceiling works, constructing walls including parapet walls, and installing new fencing.
The second phase involved an allocation of RM495,945 and covered the construction of new internal walls and related repair works, installation of internal doors, upgrading of toilets, renovation and interior finishing works, as well as air-conditioning and plumbing works.
The phase was fully completed on July 15.
Meanwhile, the third phase focused on the installation and commissioning of chandeliers, along with related works to enhance the appearance and facilities of the mosque’s interior.
The project, costing RM197,000, commenced on Oct 21, 2025 and was completed on June 29.
During the visit, Abang Johari also toured the mosque compound to view the upgrading works, which are expected to strengthen the role of Masjid As-Salam Marudi as a more comfortable, safe and community-friendly centre for worship and activities.
He also performed the Zuhur prayer at the mosque before leaving the event.
