KUCHING: A local man with a history of crime has been arrested after allegedly jumping off the Darul Hana Bridge into the Sarawak River on a dare, with the reckless stunt captured on video and widely shared across social media.
The 25-year-old was arrested by the district Criminal Investigation Division (CID) along Jalan Sekama at around 10 pm on Saturday (July 25).
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the incident took place at around 10.30 pm last Thursday, July 23, when the suspect allegedly leapt from the iconic pedestrian bridge after being challenged by another individual.
“The 28-second video of the incident later went viral on social media, prompting a police investigation that led to the suspect’s arrest.
“Background checks also found that the suspect has seven prior criminal records, while an initial urine screening returned positive for drugs,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 336 of the Penal Code for committing a rash or negligent act that endangers the life or personal safety of others.
Upon conviction, the offence carries a penalty of up to three months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM500, or both.
Alexson urged the public not to engage in reckless acts or dangerous stunts that could put their own lives or the safety of others at risk.
