KUCHING: Sarawak must continue to reject divisive politics rooted in race and religion, and instead stay focused on development to improve the lives of its people.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Sau Sin said this in a statement today (July 26), adding that the ongoing political mudslinging among parties in Peninsular Malaysia, marked by accusations centred on race and religion, did little to address the real concerns of ordinary Malaysians such as economic opportunities, public services, education and quality of life.
He said political leaders should channel their energy into serving the people rather than engaging in political theatre, adding that such divisive politics only distracted from pressing national challenges and undermined unity.
Yap said Sarawak, under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government, had charted a different path by consistently prioritising development, economic transformation, infrastructure, education, healthcare and the protection of the state’s constitutional rights.
This focus on good governance, stability and long-term planning, he said, had enabled Sarawak to continue attracting investments, creating jobs and improving quality of life for Sarawakians.
He described unity in diversity as one of Sarawak’s greatest assets, noting that its people had lived together in peace and mutual respect for generations regardless of race, religion or background.
“Politics should be about delivering tangible results for the people, not creating unnecessary controversy or deepening societal divisions,” he said in the statement, adding that Sarawakians expected their leaders to solve problems and build communities rather than engage in partisan disputes.
Yap urged political leaders nationwide to rise above narrow political interests and prioritise the welfare of the people, saying Sarawak’s success proved that unity and inclusivity go hand in hand with development.
He said the GPS government would remain committed to building a prosperous, stable and united Sarawak where every community benefits from development.
