KUALA LUMPUR: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called for greater emphasis on “Knowledge Waqf”, saying intellectual capital should become an integral part of the waqf ecosystem in a knowledge-driven economy.
The Muslim Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (PERKIM) president said the understanding of waqf should extend beyond land and physical assets, with knowledge recognised as one of the world’s most valuable forms of wealth.
” Knowledge Waqf encourages scholars to dedicate their expertise, scientists to contribute their discoveries, professionals to mentor future generations, and educational institutions to expand access to quality learning and impactful research.
“The future strength of the Muslim ummah will depend not solely on the resources beneath our soil, but increasingly on the knowledge within our people.
“Science, technology, innovation, artificial intelligence and advanced research must therefore become integral components of our waqf ecosystem,” he said in his welcoming address during the International Waqf Da’wah Convention 2026 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) this morning.
The opening of the convention was graced by Perak Sultan, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Al-Maghfur-Lah.
Abang Johari said knowledge has always been the foundation of civilisation and should become a shared asset that continues to generate benefits for society.
He added that through Knowledge Waqf, expertise, research, innovation and intellectual contributions can become part of a lasting legacy.
Scholars, researchers, experts and educational institutions are able to help transform future generations through the sharing of knowledge.
