KUCHING: Children who become victims of abuse, neglect, exploitation or violence deserve justice through close collaboration across medical, scientific and legal disciplines, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
He said forensic medicine gives a voice to those who can no longer speak, as every investigation seeks not only to establish the cause and manner of death but also to uncover the truth, uphold justice and provide answers to grieving families.
“Children are among the most vulnerable members of our society.
“They deserve not only protection during life but also justice whenever they become victims of abuse, neglect, exploitation, violence or unexplained death,” he said in a text speech read out by Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng at the opening of the International Convention of Forensic Medicine and Sciences 2026 held at a hotel here today (July 29).
He said achieving that requires close cooperation between healthcare professionals, forensic experts, investigators, prosecutors and social support agencies, with each contributing towards uncovering the truth and protecting victims.
Dr Sim said the convention’s theme, “Advancing Justice for the Young: Strengthening Multidisciplinary Forensic Practice,” reflects the growing need for different disciplines to work together as forensic investigations become more complex.
“As healthcare continues to evolve through digital transformation, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, forensic medicine must also embrace innovation while maintaining the highest standards of ethics and scientific excellence,” he said.
He added that the convention allows experts to exchange knowledge, share experiences and strengthen collaboration in addressing evolving medico legal challenges.
