BETONG: The new Sungai Paku Bridge along Jalan Tanjung Sebekut is now open to road users, improving travel efficiency and strengthening connectivity between Spaoh, Betong and surrounding areas.
According to the Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD), the RM36.9-million, 100-metre steel arch bridge was officially opened by Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas today.
The newly completed bridge replaces the previous single-lane crossing, eliminating the “stop-and-give-way” traffic system that had caused delays and improving traffic flow for daily commuters.
Jalan Tanjung Sebekut serves as an important alternative route linking Betong and Spaoh, with the route capable of reducing travel time by up to 30 minutes compared to the main route.
The Sarawak PWD said the new facility is expected to benefit more than 20 longhouses and local communities by providing better accessibility, facilitating the movement of heavy vehicles and supporting socio-economic activities in the area.
“Before the new bridge was built, road users had to rely on the existing single-lane steel bridge, which required motorists to stop and give way to oncoming vehicles, particularly during peak hours.
“With the opening of the new bridge, heavy vehicles and goods transport vehicles can now pass through the area more efficiently without having to use longer alternative routes,” said the department.
The project also included widening sections of the existing road to JKR R3 standards, and the construction of two mini roundabouts and a 150-metre riverbank protection wall.
It also involved the relocation of underwater river pipelines, electricity poles and underground cables, as well as electrical works for both the new bridge and the existing steel bridge.
The old single-lane steel bridge will be upgraded and converted into a pedestrian walkway, preserving the structure while creating a potential new landmark and attraction in Spaoh town.
The riverside area will also provide a recreational space for the public to enjoy activities such as jogging, fishing and family outings with the Sungai Paku Bridge as the backdrop.
The opening of the bridge reflects the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to improving rural infrastructure, enhancing mobility, and supporting the socio-economic development of local communities.
