KUCHING: The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has proposed establishing a permanent campus in Sarawak as part of efforts to strengthen higher education and human capital development in the state.
The proposal was presented during a courtesy call by an IIUM delegation led by its rector, Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Osman Bakar, on the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, at Astana Negeri Sarawak here today (Aug 3).
According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), the proposal outlines plans for a permanent IIUM campus that would serve as a centre for higher education and human capital development in Sarawak.
The initiative would also expand IIUM’s academic presence in the state by leveraging the university’s international network and core values.
The initiative envisions Sarawak as a regional higher education hub by combining the university’s global standing with the state’s cultural diversity, legal framework and socio-economic strengths.
“Among the key priorities is to establish a physical campus that will connect Sarawak with communities across Borneo, including Sabah, Brunei and Kalimantan, through a global learning network.
“The proposed IIUM campus in Sarawak is expected to give more Sarawakians access to internationally recognised higher education without having to relocate to Peninsular Malaysia, while further strengthening the state’s position as a regional hub for education and talent development,” reported UKAS.
