KUCHING: The federal government must accelerate reforms that deliver tangible benefits to the people instead of relying on political promises, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin.
Yap said Malaysians are more concerned about lower living costs, quality education, better infrastructure, stronger economic opportunities, and policies that improve their daily lives.
“As a government backbencher from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), I believe constructive criticism is an important part of responsible governance.
“Supporting the government where it is right and speaking up when improvements are needed is the essence of effective checks and balances,” he said in a statement today.
Yap said the GPS government in Sarawak has demonstrated that reforms can be translated into action through initiatives such as reclaiming the state’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), strengthening energy autonomy through PETROS, establishing the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund, acquiring strategic assets, introducing free tertiary education at state-owned institutions, and investing in infrastructure and flood mitigation.
“This is the standard that Malaysians expect from every level of government,” he said.
Yap urged the Pakatan Harapan-led Unity Government to fulfil its longstanding pledge to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
He said the issue has been promised repeatedly over the years and should now be brought to a fair and conclusive resolution if the Federal Government believes it will strengthen Malaysia’s human capital and educational diversity.
On targeted fuel subsidies, Yap said while the policy objective is understandable, its implementation must be continuously reviewed to ensure lower and middle-income households, small businesses, self-employed individuals, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are not unfairly affected.
He warned that rising transportation and operating costs would inevitably push up food prices, logistics costs and household expenditure, adding that government policies must balance fiscal responsibility with protecting people’s livelihoods.
Yap also called on the Federal Government to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy, improve the business environment, and strengthen policies that enhance Malaysia’s competitiveness.
At the same time, he said he remains committed to serving Kota Sentosa through infrastructure upgrades, education assistance, community grants, flood mitigation projects and programmes that improve residents’ quality of life.
“Ultimately, governments are remembered not for the number of promises they make, but for the promises they fulfil. The people deserve leadership that is prepared to make decisions, deliver results, and build a stronger future for all Malaysians,” he added.
