KUCHING: Transboundary haze is expected to affect 19 areas across Sarawak over the coming days, with unhealthy fine particulate matter concentrations forecast in Miri, Serian and Betong.
Deputy Premier and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said prevailing winds were carrying smoke from hotspots in neighbouring regions into the state.
The areas identified are Betong, Bintulu, Daro, Julau, Kanowit, Kuching, Lundu, Marudi, Miri, Mukah, Pakan, Samarahan, Saratok, Serian, Sibu, Simunjan, Song, Sri Aman and Tatau.
Citing the latest Haze Movement Report by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), he said unhealthy PM2.5 concentrations were forecast for Miri and Serian on Saturday, followed by Betong on Sunday.
“As weather conditions and wind patterns may change, the public is advised to remain vigilant and monitor the latest Air Pollution Index readings and official advisories,” he said in a statement.
The public should reduce outdoor activities, particularly strenuous exercise, when air quality deteriorates and keep doors and windows closed during periods of heavy haze.
Children, the elderly and individuals with respiratory conditions are advised to wear suitable face masks outdoors, while those experiencing breathing difficulties, chest discomfort or persistent coughing should seek medical attention.
Uggah also reminded the public that open burning is an offence under the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Ordinance.
Those convicted may face a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to five years or both.
Suspected open burning can be reported to the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) at 082-447 488 or 082-319 500.
SDMC, together with MetMalaysia, NREB, the Department of Environment and other relevant agencies, will continue monitoring the haze and coordinating response measures to safeguard public health and safety.
