SRI AMAN: The public, particularly rural communities, have been urged to verify information circulating on social media before believing or sharing it.
Bukit Begunan assemblyman Datuk Mong Dagang said the ease of sharing information through social media had also opened the door to the spread of unverified content.
“Do not easily believe or share news that has yet to be verified. The public should first check the source and authenticity of any information received,” he said.
He said this at the Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat programme at Rumah Kathleen Banggau here today.
Mong stressed that verifying information was especially important when dealing with current issues as it could cause confusion among the community.
He also urged residents to rely on credible and authoritative sources before drawing conclusions or sharing information with others.
On the programme, he said such face-to-face engagements allowed various community-related matters to be discussed directly, while providing residents with an opportunity to obtain accurate clarification on current issues.
During the event, Mong approved RM8,000 in Minor Rural Project (MRP) funding for the Rumah Kathleen Banggau Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and RM4,000 for its Women’s Bureau.
The allocations will support community, welfare and development activities at the longhouse.
