SIBU: Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng has urged the driver involved in a hit-and-run accident that left a 14-year-old secondary school student injured to surrender to police.
Chieng appealed to the public who may have witnessed the incident or have relevant dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward and assist the police investigation.
He said he visited the student at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Sibu Hospital yesterday (Aug 10) afternoon and spoke to the family about the boy’s condition and treatment.
The student was reportedly walking home from school when he was struck by a white sedan at about 3.55pm on Aug 6 near a driving school along Jalan Oya.
The accident left the teenager with a fractured left leg and multiple abrasions. He remains hospitalised and is awaiting further surgery.
“Seeing a 14-year-old child lying in a hospital bed after this accident is truly heartbreaking. I hope he can face this bravely, focus on his treatment and recover soon so that he can return to school,” Chieng said.
He said the boy’s family had lodged a police report and that the case was under investigation.
Chieng said he would continue to monitor the progress of the investigation and expressed hope that the police would quickly establish the circumstances surrounding the accident and identify the vehicle and driver involved.
“I urge the driver involved to turn himself in to the police and not evade responsibility. Traffic accidents are already regrettable, but fleeing the scene only adds to the helplessness faced by the injured and their family,” he said.
Chieng appealed to eyewitnesses to assist the authorities.
“If you were passing through the area at about 3.55pm on Aug 6 and have relevant dashcam footage, CCTV recordings or any information that could assist the police investigation, please provide it to the police as soon as possible,” he said.
