KUCHING: Health Management International (HMI) Medical is investing more than RM400 million in the first phase of a new 300-bed Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching at The NorthBank here.
HMI Group chief executive officer (CEO) Chin Wei Jia said the hospital would be developed in two phases, with additional capacity and selected centres of excellence to be added in future phases.
She said the new hospital is being developed in response to Sarawak’s continued economic growth, population expansion, stronger connectivity and rising investment, which were driving demand for high-quality healthcare.
“Today, with ageing populations, chronic disease and evolving expectations of care across the region, we expect a further increase in the volume and complexity of healthcare required.
“As needs become more complex, the state will require greater capacity and stronger specialist capabilities.
“Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs across medical, nursing, allied health, healthcare management, technical and support services when fully operational,” she said at the hospital’s groundbreaking ceremony here today (Aug 10).
The ceremony was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Designed as a next-generation smart hospital, the facility will integrate advanced medical technologies, connected digital systems and intelligent clinical workflows.
It will feature a comprehensive cancer centre, smart wards and advanced operating theatres, supported by intensive care, diagnostic and treatment facilities.
Chin said the hospital would expand specialist healthcare capacity while allowing patients to access more advanced care closer to where they live and work.
She said the Kuching hospital would also build on HMI Medical’s experience operating Regency Specialist Hospital in Johor and Mahkota Medical Centre in Melaka.
She noted that both hospitals are Elite Members of the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council and serve local and international patients.
“Together with HMI Medical’s network of 12 dedicated representative offices across Indonesia, we look forward to supporting the enhancement of Sarawak’s healthcare connectivity by expanding access to advanced specialist care for medical travellers across the region.
“At HMI Medical, we believe that the future includes expanding access to quality healthcare, bringing advanced medical capabilities closer to communities, and developing the healthcare professionals who will deliver that care.
“No matter how advanced a hospital may be, its greatest strength will always be the people working within it,” she said.
