LIMBANG: The second Sungai Limbang Bridge has reached about 90 per cent completion and is expected to be fully completed before the end of this year.
Deputy Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the project was among several major infrastructure developments being implemented to improve connectivity and support socioeconomic growth in northern Sarawak.
“The Sungai Limbang Bridge, as we can see now, has begun to take shape and only a small portion remains to be completed.
“It is currently about 90 per cent complete and is expected to be fully completed before the end of this year,” he told reporters during a visit to the project site on Monday (Aug 9) as reported by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS).
Aidel said only about 24 metres remained before the bridge could be fully connected while road construction on the opposite side was also being carried out.
He said the 229-metre bridge was among the final projects in Sarawak’s network of major bridges, which also includes the Saribas 2, Batang Rambungan and Batang Sejingkat bridges.
“As for the proposed Northern Coastal Highway (NCH), it will involve the construction of a dual two-lane carriageway connected to the Sungai Limbang Bridge and the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road Phase Two (SSLR 2) towards Merapok and Marudi.
“The project is still at an early stage and would be implemented in phases according to the development needs of the road network in northern Sarawak.”
On the proposed road from Ulu Tubai to Mentawai, Aidel clarified that the project had not been completely cancelled.
Instead, it had been separated from the current development plans due to an overlap with the main SSLR 2 alignment, which was being given priority.
“The Ulu Tubai-Mentawai road remained under consideration for the 13th Malaysia Plan but would require further studies.
“This was due to alignment constraints involving Gunung Buda National Park and water catchment areas, as well as the possibility of higher construction costs.”
