MIRI: Efforts to control the growing population of invasive iguanas here have intensified, with eight more reptiles captured during a night operation at Taman Bulatan last night (Aug 12).
The latest operation brings the total number of iguanas captured through a series of control exercises since April to 57, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and intervention to prevent the non-native species from spreading.
The operation, which began at 8pm and ended at about 10.30pm, was conducted by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and the Miri City Council (MCC).
It was led by the Sarawak Wildlife Controller and attended by councillor Yee Chung Meng, who represented the Miri mayor.
The operation focused on locating and safely capturing iguanas in the Taman Bulatan area, where authorities have been monitoring their presence.
Previous operations in April, from Jun 10 to 12, and on Jul 21 resulted in 49 iguanas being captured.
Members of the public who spot iguanas are advised to report the sightings to the relevant authorities so that appropriate control measures can be taken safely.
