MIRI: A 23-year-old man was detained for suspected drink-driving as police stepped up enforcement against motorists who put themselves and other road users at risk.
The local man was arrested during a four-hour “Op Mabuk” operation conducted along Jalan Miri-Airport from 11pm on Wednesday (Aug 12) to 3am On Aug 23.
Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation resulted in 20 traffic summonses being issued, after police screened 122 people and inspected 101 vehicles.
The operation was carried out by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division and involved a senior police officer and seven traffic personnel.
The 23-year-old suspect was detained after a breath test using a Screening Device 2 indicated the presence of alcohol in his system while he was driving.
He was taken to the Miri Traffic Police Station for further action, while a blood sample was subsequently collected at the Forensic Department of Miri Hospital for further investigation.
Police also uncovered a range of other traffic offences during the operation, including driving without a valid licence, illegal exhaust modifications, expired road tax and failure to display the mandatory “P” probationary driver sign.
ACP Mohd Farhan said the operation was part of ongoing enforcement and preventive efforts to curb traffic offences and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, a person convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol may face a fine of between RM10,000 and RM30,000 and imprisonment of up to two years for a first offence.
The offender may also be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for two years.
