KUCHING: The ‘Kuching Festival Martial Arts Display 2026’ event scheduled for Friday (Aug. 14) has been cancelled due to unhealthy air quality.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) said the decision was made as the Air Pollutant Index (API) in Kuching continued to record unhealthy levels amid the ongoing haze.
It said the event involved outdoor physical activities and performances, making it inadvisable to proceed under the current conditions.
“The health and safety of the participants, performers, officials and members of the public remain our priority,” it said in a statement.
MBKS apologised for any inconvenience caused and sought the understanding of participating martial arts associations, performers and the public.
It also thanked Natural Avenue, the event’s main sponsor, for its sponsorship and support despite the cancellation.
“Although the event is unable to proceed due to circumstances beyond our control, we greatly value their support and commitment to the Kuching Festival,” it said.
MBKS also advised the public to take necessary precautions during the haze, particularly by reducing prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities when the API remains at unhealthy levels.
