KUCHING: The Sarawak Gastronomy Centre is about 80 per cent complete and is expected to be ready by the end of this year.
Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan said the centre is about 80 per cent complete and is still in the final stage of preparation before opening to the public.
He said several matters, particularly the interior, are still being fine-tuned.
“It is still under preparation. I think it is in the final stage before we open it to the public.
“However, there are still a few things to be completed, especially the interior,” he said when met by reporters after officiating the PATA Youth Symposium (PYS) and the 4th Education in Hospitality and Tourism Forum (EHTF) 2026 at a hotel here today (Aug 17).
Snowdan said the centre also needed to obtain the necessary building approval, including the Certificate of Fitness and certification from the Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak or the relevant authorities to ensure the building was in order.
He added that despite a slight delay, the building is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
“I think around 80 per cent so, as I said, it will be completed by the end of this year.
“But we are still waiting for the necessary building approvals and certification,” he added.
Commenting on the centre’s design concept, he said it was based on its own design and developed with a consultant and its own architect to suit Sarawak’s circumstances.
“It is our own design. When we had discussions with the consultant, we looked at our own situation.
“We have our own architect to make sure it is fine-tuned to what we have and tailor-made to Sarawak’s own design,” he said.
He added the approach was similar to that of the Craft Centre.
“So, we have to fine-tune it according to our own tastes here in Sarawak,” he added.
