SELANGOR: Sarawak’s women’s volleyball team maintained its unbeaten start to the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026 with a commanding 3-0 victory over Johor on Tuesday (Aug 18) today.
Although the Sarawakians looked unsettled early on, they recovered to take the opening two sets 25-15 before wrapping up the match 25-13 in the third.
Coach Angela Tang said fatigue and nerves affected her players during the opening stages.
“They were a bit tired actually, and kind of nervous during the early sets.
“I asked them to concentrate and they managed to change their pacing,” she told Sarawak Tribune at Dewan Bola Tampar MBSA.
Angela said the coaching staff slowed the tempo to help the team regain control before increasing the intensity once the players settled.
“We had to change a little bit of our strategy by playing at a slower pace and avoiding fast momentum.
“Once we found our rhythm, we ramped up our gameplay and became faster, not giving the opponents the chance to recover,” she said.
Angela also credited the team’s growing chemistry despite only five players from the current squad having featured at the previous SUKMA.
“Some girls have to train on the weekends only, stay at the centralised training facility then go home again on Sunday.
“Quite challenging for them, but nonetheless, the results are impressive,” she added.
Sarawak will conclude its group-stage campaign against Pahang on Wednesday tomorrow.
