SELANGOR: Sarawak’s Yoyo Wong Zhi Yao delivered the state’s first gold medal of the day in dramatic fashion, producing a personal-best throw on her final attempt to win the women’s hammer throw title at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) XXII on Tuesday (Aug 18) today.
With four fouls already against her, Yoyo had one last opportunity to turn the competition around at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Stadium.
She did exactly that.
The Sarawak thrower unleashed a personal-best 48.14m on her sixth and final attempt to snatch gold ahead of Perlis’ Nur Salsabila Mohd Zam S, who settled for silver with 47.71m.
Pahang’s Nurul Aiyani claimed bronze with 46.63m.
Yoyo’s path to gold was anything but straightforward. She fouled her opening two throws before registering 46.97m on her third attempt. Two more fouls followed, leaving everything riding on her final throw.
When it mattered most, she delivered.
The winning mark also marked another milestone in Yoyo’s steady progress this season.
Earlier this year, she claimed bronze at the Malaysia Open Athletics Championship with a best throw of 47.24m. Her SUKMA-winning effort improved that mark by 90cm while securing the biggest title of her career so far.
