MUKAH: An Indonesian plantation worker found himself in handcuffs after allegedly being caught with suspected methamphetamine worth about RM500 at an oil palm plantation on Monday (Aug 17).

The 31-year-old was taken into custody by a team from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) at around 2 pm following intelligence gathered and surveillance.

A search of his room at the workers’ quarters uncovered two plastic packets and four straw tubes containing crystalline substances believed to be methamphetamine.

Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said the drugs, weighing 9.40g, were found inside a cigarette box belonging to the suspect.

“Both the suspect and seized items were subsequently taken to the district police headquarters (IPD) for further investigation.

“A urine test conducted on him also returned positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine,” he said.

The suspect has been remanded for four days until Aug 22 to facilitate investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of a specified quantity of drugs and Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act for drug use.

Rizal said he was also investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not possessing valid travel documents.

He assured that police would continue intensifying efforts to curb drug abuse and trafficking in the district to safeguard public safety and security.

Members of the public with information on criminal or drug-related activities can report them to the Mukah IPD hotline at 084-871222 or the nearest police station.
