SIBU: Grassroots engagement remains at the heart of community service as the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch team recently went door-to-door in Tanjung Kunyit here, visiting about 13 households to hear directly from residents about their daily concerns and needs.

The outreach was also joined by former Penghulu Law Buong Woo, whose participation added local leadership support to the team’s efforts to strengthen ties with residents and gain a better understanding of issues affecting the community.

SUPP Bawang Assan Branch’s Chairman, Kevin Lau Kor Jie, said house-to-house visits remained an important component of grassroots service as they allowed the team to engage residents in their own homes and listen to their concerns firsthand.

He said direct engagement provided a clearer picture of residents’ family circumstances, living conditions and practical challenges – issues that might not always be fully reflected through formal channels or public meetings.

“Tanjung Kunyit is a closely knit community. Grassroots service is not only about helping to address local issues, but more importantly, about maintaining close contact with residents and understanding their genuine needs and concerns,” he said.

Lau stressed that meaningful community service should go beyond responding to problems after they arise, with regular engagement helping leaders identify concerns earlier and understand the realities faced by different households.

He said the branch would continue its house-to-house outreach programme to maintain a close connection with communities and assist residents with issues within its capacity.

“Serving sincerely, listening attentively and maintaining close ties with the community have always been the principles guiding our grassroots service efforts,” added Lau, who is also SUPP Youth chief.

The Tanjung Kunyit visit underscored the branch’s continued emphasis on face-to-face engagement, where conversations at the doorstep serve as an important channel for understanding community needs and strengthening trust between grassroots leaders and residents.
