KUCHING: A 24-year-old man was fined RM1,800 in default three months imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here today for making a false police report claiming that he had been robbed.
Che Mohd Syukri Azizul Abdullah Che Mohd Ali pleaded guilty before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali to an offence under Section 182 of the Penal Code.
The offence under Section 182 of the Penal Code carries a maximum fine of RM2,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
The charge stated that on May 3, at about 2.30 pm, at the Kuching District Police Headquarters, the accused had knowingly provided false information in writing to a police officer, with the intention of causing the officer to exercise her lawful powers to the detriment of another person.
The court heard that the accused had lodged a police report alleging that he had been robbed by unidentified men.
However, during investigations, the accused admitted that the report was false and that the alleged robbery had been fabricated.
It was understood that RM1,200 salary had actually been spent by the accused on gambling at an unnamed premises along Jalan Demak, Kuching.
The accused reportedly made the false report out of fear that his wife would become angry after learning that his salary had been spent on gambling.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Marvin Kaliyani, while the accused was unrepresented.
