SIBU: A 29-year-old man with two previous drug convictions was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and one stroke of the cane by the Sessions Court here today (Aug 26) after testing positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Sessions Court Judge Musyiri Peet imposed the sentence on Christopher Junit of Batang Igan, who was also ordered to be placed under police supervision for two years upon his release.
The court was told that Christopher committed the offence at about 3.30pm on May 21, 2026, at Jalan Wawasan.
He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39C(1) of the same Act.
The charge sheet stated that Christopher had self-administered dangerous drugs, namely amphetamine and methamphetamine.
He was arrested by police from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, Sibu District Police Headquarters, after officers suspected him of being involved in drug abuse activities.
An initial urine screening using a rapid test returned a positive result for drugs.
The urine specimen was subsequently sent to the Pathology Department at Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching for analysis.
A laboratory report dated July 8, 2026, confirmed that the specimen contained amphetamine and methamphetamine, both substances listed under the First Schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Further checks against the criminal registry revealed that Christopher had two previous convictions for offences under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act.
The previous convictions, both dated September 3, 2024, were recorded under separate case numbers.
With the latest offence constituting a repeat drug-related offence, Christopher was liable for enhanced punishment under Section 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The court subsequently sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment and one stroke of the cane.
Upon completing his prison term, Christopher will also remain under police supervision for two years.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Cynthia Emmelda Jerry, while the accused was unrepresented by legal counsel.
