KUCHING: Air quality in Serian reached hazardous levels this morning (Aug 30), with the Air Pollutant Index (API) climbing to 364 as haze conditions worsened across several parts of Sarawak.
According to the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), the IPD Serian reading stood at 364 as of 8 am today, placing it well above the 300 threshold for the hazardous category.
Several other areas also recorded very unhealthy air quality, with Samarahan registering an API of 300, followed by Kuching at 291, Lubok Antu (239), Lundu (236) and Sri Aman (214).
Other areas recording very unhealthy readings were Tebedu (200), Sarikei (195), Sibu (187), Bintulu (179), Samalaju (171), Mukah (170), Kapit (159), Miri (155), ILP Miri (151) and Bario (116).
Meanwhile, Limbang and Lawas recorded moderate API readings of 88 and 99, respectively.
API readings of 201 to 300 fall under the Very Unhealthy category, while readings above 300 are classified as Hazardous.
The hazardous level indicates a significant health risk to the public, particularly those who are more vulnerable to the effects of air pollution.
