KUCHING: Schools in Sarawak will be closed if the Air Pollutant Index (API) reaches 200 or above, in line with established guidelines, says State Education Department director Omar Mahli.
He said nine districts were currently affected by API readings of 200 and above and the department would apply the same guidelines to determine further action should the situation persist.
“If we look at the current readings, there are nine affected districts with readings of 200 and above. So, if this continues, we will use the same guidelines — when the API reaches 200 and above, we will close the schools,” he was quoted as saying in a TVS report after attending the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) meeting here today (Aug 31).
Omar said schools are currently still on holiday until Sept 7, with the department continuing to monitor API readings before making any decision regarding their reopening.
