KUCHING: Newly appointed Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Kumarasan Muniandy has been tasked with taking firm action against crime syndicates and gangsterism activities in the state.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said no group would be spared enforcement action, including unlicensed money-lending syndicates, if they were found to be involved in serious offences under the Penal Code.
“There are still drug trafficking groups that are under our watch, but we believe that they are being careful. If we can prove sufficient elements to take action, we will act,” he said when met by reporters here today (Sept 1).
Zainal said the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) remained available as a tool against such groups.
“This is the only weapon we still have, because anyone detained under SOSMA will not be granted bail while the case is being tried, except under certain circumstances,” he said.
He said police had previously taken SOSMA action against a crime syndicate, with the case still awaiting trial.
Zainal said he had placed the responsibility of tackling organised crime on the new CID chief and called on all departments within the Sarawak police contingent to work together on stronger enforcement.
Kumarasan has assumed his duties as Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief following a handover ceremony today, during which ACP Mohd Ishak Yaakob handed over the post to him in the presence of Zainal.
