SIBU: Besides having to grapple with haze from Kalimantan, locals here have to contend with smoke from a bush fire in Lorong Teku 14, which started on Sept 3.

The bush fire, which has affected an area of about four hectares, entered its fifth day yesterday, with firefighters managing to extinguish about one hectare.

The Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Sungai Merah) deployed 11 personnel to carry out firefighting operations at the site since day one.

According to the operation report, the team yesterday used two 1,400-litre jet pumps to draw water from a ditch located to the right of the burning area.

The firefighters also employed a firebreak method to prevent the flames from spreading further.

As of 6pm yesterday, about one hectare had been tackled, leaving an estimated three hectares of the affected area still requiring attention.

However, the operation was suspended at 6pm due to personnel safety considerations and is scheduled to resume today.

The bush fire was first reported at 11.46am on Sept 3, with firefighters continuing efforts to contain and extinguish the blaze over the following days.
