Two with 17 prior records held over cable theft

KUCHING: Two men with a combined 17 prior criminal records have been arrested over an alleged cable theft and criminal intimidation case in Kubah Ria, Jalan Matang.

The suspects, aged 38 and 36, were arrested by the district Criminal Investigation Division (CID) at around 10.50pm last Saturday (Sept 5), following a report of the incident the day before (Sept 4).

The seized cars believed to have been used in the cable theft and criminal intimidation case.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said police also seized a blue Proton Iswara, a white Toyota Vios, a cable cutter and a set of car keys believed to be linked to the case.

“Background checks found that the first suspect had nine prior criminal records, while the second had eight, giving them a combined total of 17 past records.

“Both suspects also tested positive for drugs following urine screening,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a maximum seven-year jail term, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Alexson added that the case is also being probed under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which carries a maximum seven-year jail term, a fine, or both.

Efforts are underway to track down a third suspect who remains at large.
