MIRI: International participation in the Velosolutions UCI Pump Track World Championships Qualifier Miri – Malaysia 2026 has further raised the city’s standing as a destination capable of hosting major sporting events.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the hosting of the championship demonstrated Miri’s ability to provide suitable facilities and an environment for international-standard sporting events.
He said the Velosolutions Pump Track at Taman Bulatan, which was initially developed as a community and youth facility, had now become a qualifying venue for the UCI Pump Track World Championships.
“This is something to be proud of as a facility developed for the local community is now capable of attracting riders from various countries,” he said during the Welcoming Luncheon for the Velosolutions UCI Pump Track World Championships Qualifier Miri – Malaysia 2026 at a hotel here on Sept 5, as reported by UKAS.
The championship, held on Sept 5 and 6, brought together riders from Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, China, France, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Australia and several other countries.
Ting added that the participation of international competitors also provided an opportunity to promote Miri as the gateway to northern Sarawak, including through the introduction of local food and handicrafts at the Food and Crafts Village.
At the same time, competitors in the Elite Men and Elite Women categories had the opportunity to vie for a place in the World Championships Final in Beijing, while the presence of international athletes served as an inspiration for local young riders to develop their talents in pump track cycling.
