The areas reporting moderate air pollution levels are Sibu with an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 92, Kapit at 89, Miri at 87, Limbang and Lawas both at 80, and Bario at 52.
According to the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), an API reading between 51 and 100 is classified under the moderate category, indicating moderate air pollution that does not pose any adverse effects on public health.
Meanwhile, two locations recorded API readings in the very unhealthy range between 201 and 300, with Serian registering 212 and Lundu reporting 204. NREB noted that air quality at this level could worsen health conditions and reduce tolerance for physical exercise, particularly among individuals with heart and lung complications, while affecting public health overall.
The remaining monitoring stations across the state stayed within the unhealthy bracket of 101 to 200, led by Samarahan at 185, Lubok Antu at 183, Kuching at 181, Tebedu at 179, Sarikei at 176, Samalaju and ILP Miri both at 165, Sri Aman and Betong (MCAQM) both at 158, Bintulu at 157, Mukah at 152, and Kanowit at 136. Unhealthy API readings can worsen the condition of high-risk individuals, especially those with pre-existing heart and lung issues.
NREB added that API values are calculated based on a 24-hour running average of the most dominant air pollutant parameter.
