KUCHING: A 30-year-old man is facing a possible trafficking charge after narcotics police seized more than 500g of suspected cannabis during a raid on Monday (Sept 7).
The local suspect was arrested by officers from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) at around 7 pm at an apartment’s parking area in Jalan Stutong Baru.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said a search of the suspect uncovered 554g of suspected cannabis and another 15g of suspected cannabis flower, with the drugs estimated to be worth RM1,600.
“The suspect also tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in an initial urine screening.
“Background checks found that the suspect had no prior criminal record,” he said.
He is being remanded for five days from Sept 9 to 13 to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
If convicted, the suspect may face the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping of up to 12 strokes.
Alexson said the arrest was the result of continued intelligence gathering and cooperation from the public.
Police will not compromise with any party involved in drug trafficking as possessing, distributing or protecting drug activities is a serious offence under the law.
