KUCHING: As part of its initiatives under its Socio-Economic Enhancement Development (SEED) Programme, Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd recently co-organised a hands-on STEM laboratory learning activity for selected primary school pupils at the newly-launched Sarawak Science Centre.
Pupils and teachers from seven schools were invited to participate in the STEM lab learning activity, which was co-organised by Sarawak Metro and its Systems Package 1 contractor, EMG JV Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between EPR Sdn Bhd, Mobilus Sdn Bhd and Global Rail Sdn Bhd.
The participating schools were SK Petra Jaya, SK Telaga Air, SK Semenggok, SK Muara Tebas, SK Semerah Padi, SJKC Chung Hua No. 6 and SK Encik Buyong.
“The STEM lab learning activity aimed to introduce the pupils to the fundamentals of hydrogen energy in line with Sarawak Metro’s aspiration of instilling greater interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects among young children,” said Sarawak Metro in a press statement on Thursday.
The STEM lab learning activity provided the pupils the opportunity to learn about the electrolysis process through fun and interactive laboratory activities, giving them a practical introduction to how hydrogen can be produced from water using electricity.
“Through the hands-on learning experience, the students were able to explore basic scientific concepts behind electrolysis while gaining a better understanding of hydrogen as an energy source and its potential role in supporting a cleaner and more sustainable future.
“The STEM lab learning activity is aligned with Sarawak Metro’s commitment in supporting the Sarawak government’s efforts to promote STEM education and nurture future generations of talent, particularly in fields related to green technology,” it said.
The activity also provided an avenue for students to gain early exposure to hydrogen technology beyond the classroom, while encouraging them to view STEM subjects from a practical and real-world perspective.
Sarawak Metro believes that initiatives such as this can help cultivate greater interest in STEM education among young people and contribute towards developing the talent pipeline needed to support Sarawak’s transition towards greener mobility and a technology-driven future.
