KUCHING: Twenty-one foreigners were hauled in for further investigation after immigration officers swept through the district’s industrial zones on Wednesday (Sept 9).

The detainees were among 72 individuals inspected during ‘Ops Mahir’, an operation targeting compliance in the manufacturing sector, held at Demak Laut Industrial Park and Sejingkat Industrial Estate.

Acting on public complaints and intelligence gathered, the Sarawak Immigration Department raided three factories from 10am to 12.30pm.

The 21 were detained after they were suspected of offences under Sections 15(1)(c) and 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

In addition, three witness summonses were issued to assist with further investigations and enforcement action.

The department said it would continue conducting targeted and sustained operations to ensure compliance with immigration laws.

Members of the public and industry players are urged to report information on suspected violations to help curb the misuse of immigration facilities and prevent loopholes from being exploited.
