SELANGOR: Sarawak’s boccia squad met its medal target at Para SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026 despite having fewer opportunities to compete after the team and pairs events were dropped from the programme.

The contingent finished the individual competition with five medals, comprising two golds and three silvers.

Muhd Nur Sharizan Ikhwan Abdullah Saparudin struck gold in the men’s BC1 individual event, while Angeline Melissa Lawas matched the feat in the women’s BC1 individual event.

Willyien Cliff Honseng added silver in the men’s BC1 individual event, while Jervis Chi Hong Zhe and Sheirviana Mathew claimed silver in the men’s and women’s BC3 individual events respectively.

Head coach Honseng Andrias Nyawin said the team had originally targeted more medals before the host removed the team and pairs events.

“Actually, our target was more than that. But since the team and pairs events were dropped by the host, there was nothing we could do. We achieved our target through the individual events,” he said today (Sept 10).

Honseng also credited the team’s preparations, which included helping the athletes adapt to the weather and haze conditions in Selangor.

“Before coming here, we focused on adapting to the environment, especially the differences in weather between Sarawak and West Malaysia and the haze.

“We also kept our athletes in the hotel as much as possible to reduce their exposure and ensure they stayed healthy throughout the competition,” he said.

The five-medal haul ensured Sarawak’s boccia squad returned home having fulfilled its objective despite competing in a reduced programme.
