SEMOP: The nearly RM300 million Batang Paloh bridge is nearing completion, with the long-awaited link expected to open to the public as early as mid-October.
Tanjong Manis MP Datuk Yusuf Abdul Wahab said the project had entered its final construction phase, with the entire bridge structure now connected.
He said the remaining works involved finishing works along the sides of the bridge, roadworks, installation of lighting and several related facilities.
“We are certainly excited to see the progress of the Batang Paloh Bridge as the people have been waiting for a long time for this facility to be completed.
“If all works proceed smoothly, we expect the bridge to be opened for public use as early as mid-October, although the actual opening date has yet to be determined,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after attending the presentation of Smart TVs to schools at SMK Semop here yesterday (Sept 12).
The bridge will serve as an important link between Pulau Bruit and Tanjong Manis, Sarikei and Sibu, easing the movement of residents without relying entirely on ferry services.
Yusuf said the bridge was expected to have a significant impact on the community by improving connectivity, spurring local development and creating more economic opportunities.
“With the bridge in place, travel for the people will be smoother and congestion, particularly during festive seasons, can be reduced.
“This will not only provide greater convenience to the people but also bring economic spillover benefits and create opportunities for various development activities in the surrounding areas,” he said.
The bridge is now awaiting completion of the remaining works and safety clearance before it can be opened to the public, with mid-October targeted for the opening if everything proceeds smoothly.
