MUKAH: Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine has lodged a police report over the use of an analogy touching on religious sensitivities in a recent speech by a political representative.
Royston said he lodged the report at the Mukah District Police Headquarters today and subsequently gave a statement to the investigating officer for more than three hours to assist with the investigation.
“I took this action not because of political ideological differences. That is why I came alone without the presence of members of the political party I represent.
“This is about my responsibility as a Christian, concern for religious sensitivities and the harmony of Malaysia’s multiracial society, all with the aim of preventing similar incidents from recurring in the future,” he said in a statement posted on his Facebook.
Royston said issues involving the 3Rs — royalty, religion and race — should not be put at stake or used as comparisons that could lead to misunderstanding, anxiety or tension within society.
He said he had left the matter entirely to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to conduct its investigation professionally, fairly and in accordance with the law.
At the same time, Royston reminded that freedom of speech came with great responsibility, particularly for elected representatives.
“As a representative of the people and my faith, I will continue to stand firm in defending harmony, tolerance and mutual respect between religions and races, which have long been the foundation of Malaysia’s unity,” he said.
Royston also stressed that not all jokes are suitable for everyone, particularly in a multiracial and multi-religious country such as Malaysia.
“What may be considered an ‘adult joke’ in the West may not necessarily be acceptable here, especially when it involves religious sensitivities.
“Humour is subjective, but respect is universal,” he said.
