KUCHING: Sarawak marked Malaysia Day with prayers and thanksgiving as Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg joined a state-level ceremony.
Wan Junaidi and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, attended the Majlis Kesyukuran Sambutan Perayaan Hari Malaysia Peringkat Sarawak 2026 at Masjid Jamek Negeri Sarawak here last night (Sept 15).
Abang Johari was also present with his daughter, Dayang Norjihan, alongside state ministers, deputy ministers and other dignitaries.
Wan Junaidi and Fauziah arrived at 6.30pm and were received by Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the minister responsible for the 2026 Malaysia Day celebration, and Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy Berhad and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki, the deputy minister responsible for the thanksgiving ceremony.
The programme began with congregational Maghrib prayers, followed by a Yasin recital led by Sarawak Grand Imam, Sahibul Fadilah Datuk Mustapha Kamal Ahmad Fauzi.
The gathering was then enlivened by a ‘zikir marhaban’ recital by the Gabungan Kumpulan Zikir Guru Al-Quran Majlis Islam Sarawak before Mustapha Kamal led the thanksgiving prayer.
After the call to Isyak prayer, the programme continued with congregational Isyak prayers.
A dinner was held afterwards, attended by state ministers, non-Muslim dignitaries and their respective spouses.
Wan Junaidi and Fauziah later left the ceremony accompanied by Abang Johari and other dignitaries.
Also present were State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and his wife, Datuk Baduyah Bujang; Majlis Islam Sarawak president Datuk Misnu Taha; Sarawak Islamic Religious Department director and ceremony organising committee chairman Ustaz Mual Suaud; heads of departments; and members of the local community.
