KUCHING: A 37-year-old man was fined RM1,700, in default two months imprisonment, by the Magistrates’ Court here today for lodging a false police report claiming he had been robbed.
Abdul Shaqir Rahit pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.
He was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code for knowingly providing false information in writing to a public servant with the intention of causing the officer to use his lawful powers based on the false information.
The offence under Section 182 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of six months, or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
The charge stated that Abdul Shaqir had lodged the police report at about 5:02 pm on September 15 at the UTC Kuching Police Pondok.
According to the facts of the case, police later conducted further questioning of the accused at Kuching District Police Headquarters at about 7:45 pm on the same day.
During questioning, police discovered that the report lodged by the accused contained false information.
In the report, the accused claimed that he had been robbed by two unidentified men at a parking area near Public Bank along Jalan Song Thian Cheok.
However, he later admitted that the alleged robbery had not occurred and that the money mentioned in the report had actually been misappropriated to settle debts and cover outstanding financial commitments.
Police investigations subsequently established that the incident described in the report did not take place.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan, appeared for the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented.
