KUCHING: A father came all the way from Saratok to support his sons competing in the Traditional Longboat and Raja Sungai (King of Rivers) races.

68-year-old Bajieng Imbing drove a long way to Kuching Waterfront to see his sons competing and showing his support.

Despite the hot weather, it did not deter him to sit close to the water for his love and passion for longboat races.

“I drove from Saratok because I love boat racing, and my sons are competing today. Of course, they are competing for different teams.

“At the same time, I’m here to support my sons and I’m really happy to be here despite the weather,” he said.

Ahead of the weekend, crowds gathered along the riverbank early Friday morning as rowers pushed their limits in the preliminary heats to secure a spot in the finals.

Spectators lined the waterfront railing with umbrellas under the scorching sun, while others watched live race coverage on large public screens.

Elsewhere along the concourse, groups gathered under sheltered spots to follow the action live on their smartphones.

Running from October 30 to November 1 (coming Sunday), the event will culminate in the final day’s main event, where the winning team will be crowned ‘Raja Sungai’.

With heavy crowds of local and international visitors expected throughout the weekend, the Sarawak River is set for intense action and high energy from the supporting spectators.
